Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) in Jupiter, FL

Koger Cosmetic Clinic & Medspa offers ear pinning for women in Palm Beach County, including West Palm Beach, Vero Beach, Wellington, and the surrounding areas of Florida.

Ear shape and size can be modified with ear pinning, also known as otoplasty. The technique is performed for aesthetic reasons and brings the ears in proportion with the head and other features.

About otoplasty

The surgery begins with an incision made just behind the ear in the natural fold where the ear is joined to the head. Dr. Koger will then remove the necessary amount of cartilage and skin required to achieve the right effect. In some cases, Dr. Koger will trim the cartilage, shaping it into a more desirable form and pinning the cartilage back with permanent sutures to secure it. In other instances, the Dr. Koger will not remove any cartilage at all, using stitches to hold the cartilage permanently in place. After sculpting the cartilage to the desired shape, Dr. Koger will apply sutures to anchor the ear until healing occurs to hold the ear in the desired position.

Benefits of ear pinning

Ear reshaping through an otoplasty procedure works to restore the aesthetic and cosmetic qualities of the ear by reducing the curvature of the cartilage in the ear. This allows Dr. Koger to create a more natural ear proportion and appearance. Otoplasty can be performed on children over the age of five and in adults to “pin back” ears that protrude or to reshape, resize, or otherwise make the ears more symmetrical.

Candidates for ear pinning

Any person who feels self-conscious about their ears can be a great candidate for otoplasty. Both children and adults can tend to be self-conscious if their ears are too prominent. This overly prominent ear issue tends to happen when there is an abnormal formation of cartilage at the base of the ear. Unfortunately, as a result, children first become aware of their overly prominent ears when they become the victims of cruel nicknames and teasing. But while children are the most likely candidates for otoplasty, the good news is that this surgery can be performed at any age after the ears have reached full size, usually around five to six years of age. The best candidates for otoplasty are those patients interested in reducing the prominence of their ears, changing the shape or proportion of their ears, or reconstructing a damaged ear.

Planning your otoplasty

During your preliminary consultation, Dr. Koger will take your thorough medical history, as well as assessing your mental and emotional attitudes toward the surgery. A realistic attitude is crucial to the success of the surgery. Dr. Koger will answer any questions you may have about the surgical procedure and realistic expectations will be discussed. Ear pinning can be done under local or general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. Once your ears have healed, they will appear smaller and more balanced to your natural features.

Where your ear pinning is performed

Ear pinning is performed in a surgical suite on an outpatient basis. Someone will need to drive the patient home after the procedure.

Type of anesthesia for your ear pinning

Otoplasty is performed with general or local anesthesia.

After your otoplasty

The ears are covered with a compression bandage to hold the tissues in place. Cartilage does require time to heal and any impacts will affect the outcome of the procedure. Parents whose children have otoplasty should take extra precautions to ensure that the ears are protected from impacts and touching until fully healed.

Getting back to normal after ear pinning

Dr. Koger will discuss with you what you can expect in terms of your recovery and getting back to normal after otoplasty. Typically you may experience some swelling or mild discomfort right after your procedure. Dr. Koger will advise you of any recommended aftercare instructions, which you should be careful to follow so that you heal properly with optimal results.

Your new look after ear pinning

After the cartilage is healed, the results of ear pinning are permanent.
